Following up on Online Interviews in Real Time, Janet Salmon has issued a call for cases for a new collection: Cases in Online Interview Research. This new work will advance the theoretical and conceptual foundations of online interview research. This edited volume will include a very selective collection of cases from researchers who have conducted structured to unstructured online interviews using a variety of qualitative methodologies and mixed methods approaches with data collection from text-based, multi-channel meeting, videoconference and immersive technologies. Contributors will be asked to construct the chapter in the manner of a case study, in order to maximize its instructional potential. Six to eight cases will be included in the book.

Cases in Online Interview Research will offer significant, multi-disciplinary insight into emerging e- research approaches. The structure of the book will model critical thinking and review in an effort to stimulate further discussion.

TwitterLoCIRE Project Assistant and UW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies PhD student Anthony Hoffmann has posted a four part analysis of the recent Twitter-Library of Congress deal at his blog Sex, Drugs, and Intellectual Freedom.

In parts one through three, he addresses issues as far ranging as privacy/user rights, digital divides and the the cultural record, as well as intercultural information ethics and digital classification.

In part four, he turns his attention to Internet research ethics, and (building on the previous three posts), poses a handful of questions for researchers in light of the deal:

  • How do we conduct meaningful research in the archive and still respect the rights and privacy of individual Twitterers who did not necessarily consent to being researched?
  • How do we make sense of this data in a way that is meaningful anywhere outside the context of Twitter itself?
  • How will we handle the issue of intercultural information ethics and representation when we conduct research on this archive?

Check out the entire series for more detail.

IJIRE Logo

The International Journal of Internet Research Ethics (IJIRE) seeks papers from researchers describing best ethical practices in the investigation of online communities. This special issue, edited by Aleks Krotoski, aims to create a compendium of case studies and theoretical frameworks which future scholars will reference when designing their own analyses of populations and practices in social networking sites, weblogs, listservs, online games, video sharing sites, virtual worlds and other Web environments that demonstrate evidence of community processes.

The special issue seeks to include submissions that introduce extensions to existing theories - including new frameworks for approaching the ethical
issues that emerge in online communities and novel applications of existing offline ethics frameworks - and examples of best practice - including case studies of successful ethical solutions, both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, issues associated with international ethics practices, and changes to ethical approaches over the short- and the long-term.

While all forms of scholarship and research are welcome, the special issue will feature theoretically and empirically grounded study in the social or behavioural sciences.
